Dont't miss the World Cup!!     11/06/2010
Today is the start of the World Cup in Africa, and also the start of a purely coincidental rise in absenteeism from work in order to catch some of the games that will be played mid-afternoon. But did you know that it’s just as easy for you and your employees to watch the games live over the Internet from your PC at work. Simply set up an account at www.tvcatchup.com (no fees involved) and stream the games over the Internet in real-time, and for free (the quality is pretty good too). The website also works on the iPhone and other smart phones so you can even watch the games when not near your work or home computer. Have a great World Cup and COME ON ENGLAND!!

MacAfee Antivirus update cripples Windows XP PC’s     22/04/2010
McAfee have apologised to users of their Antivirus software after a faulty virus definition update incorrectly identified a legitimate windows process as a virus and began to attempt to quarantine the file. The issue results in the machine crashing and entering an endless reboot loop. Barry McPherson, the company's executive vice president for customer service admitted the company had let its customers down. "In our ongoing efforts to protect our customers from a seemingly endlessly multiplying variety and volume of attacks, today we released a update file that clearly did more harm than good," he said. "There was a legitimate threat and we wanted to protect our customers, as we have done successfully thousands and thousands of times before. But in trying to do so, we created negative and unintended consequences for some very important people. Many of you." "Mistakes happen. No excuses," McPherson added. "The nearly 7,000 employees of McAfee are focused right now on two things, in this order. First, help our customers who have been affected by this issue get back to business as usual. And second, once that is done, make sure we put the processes in place so this never happens again."

Free copy of Office 2010 for Office 2007 buyers     05/02/2010
A leaked blog post has hinted at the possibility that Microsoft will be supplying free copies of their latest Office software, soon to be released in June this year. Microsoft have previously allowed recent purchases of previous software versions to be upgraded for free, much like the recent Windows 7 free upgrade program from Vista. Customers purchasing Office 2007 between March 5th and September 30th will be entitled to download the 2010 release of Office for free, or request a DVD copy of the software for a small charge, although there has been no official confirmation of this from Microsoft at the time of writing. Beta copies of Office 2010 are already available and can be downloaded for free using the link below

Windows 7 tips and tricks     12/01/2010
Windows 7 is arguably the best operating system to have been launched by Microsoft in many years, and let’s face it with the advancement in hardware and the Internet, so it should be! But it’s not just a slick new user interface with improved performance; there are many new features which are designed to make your life easier, and or course, get the job done quicker. Possibly the best feature we have found from a user point of view is being able to “snap” documents to an area of the screen. This is ideal if you quickly want to maximise or minimise an application – you simply click and drag the application to the top of the screen to maximise it, or the opposite to minimise. Sounds pretty mundane up to now, but you can also drag the document to the left or right of the screen to view it in a split screen format. This is a great feature if you ever need to compare two documents side by side, or are perhaps comparing your next new purchase online. You can also use the windows key on your keyboard along with one of the directional arrow keys to achieve the same result. Eg Win+Left will snap the document to the left, and so on. Another big improvement is the Windows Calculator (type ‘calculator’ after clicking start to locate the Windows Calculator). Microsoft has added lots of useful additional functions which are accessible by clicking the view button within Calculator. This is great for converting weights, distances or other units. The date calculator is particularly useful for calculating the number of days between dates, or adding / subtracting days from a given date – perfect for planning your next holiday!.
