Its official, Microsoft have announced that Windows 10 is coming on 29th July 2015, and is available as a FREE upgrade for a limited time. So what’s new and why should you upgrade? We’ve been testing the Windows 10 Technical Preview for some time now, here are our favourite new features

It’s FREE!

Microsoft revealed back in January that Windows 10 will be available for users of Windows 7 and Windows 8 / 8.1 as a completely free upgrade. This is however a limited offer valid for 1 year (although they may extend that) so be sure to register as soon as possible and don’t miss out.

The return of the Start Menu

The changes to the Start Menu (known as Metro) in Windows 8 were not popular, and is in fact one of the main reasons that over 2 years later, most new equipment we deploy for our customers is pre-installed with Windows 7. Windows 10 will see a return to the traditional Windows 7 Start Menu, albeit retaining some of the useful features of the Windows 8 Metro interface

Cortana

Windows 10 will include the Digital Personal Assistant “Cortana”, which has been available on Windows smart phones for some time now and rivals the likes of Apple’s Siri and Google Now. You can use Cortana to find information or to perform basic tasks from your PC, laptop or Windows Phone, and can be either voice or text driven. You can invoke it by saying “Hey Cortana”, then provide details of your request, for example “Schedule a meeting in London next Wednesday at 10AM with Joe Bloggs”. Cortana will automatically create an entry in your diary for you.

Continuum Mode

Windows 10 is built for PC, Laptop, Tablet, and Smart Phone, which means you have a common interface across all your devices. Windows 10 will also adapt automatically to the device you are using. For example, a Tablet with a keyboard and mouse connected will be optimised for Keyboard and mouse input. Disconnect these, and the interface will be optimised for touch screen, with larger on screen buttons, and an on screen keyboard.

Hololens

Windows 10 is the first holographic computing platform, which is perhaps the most futuristic new feature. Your programs and applications come to life as holograms, seamlessly integrating with your office, or your home (video demonstration below)
